Record the old bulb
Before shopping, photograph the label and socket. Note the lumen value, shape and physical size if they are printed. The replacement must fit inside the shade and meet the fitting’s limits; a matching screw base alone does not settle every compatibility question.
Consider where the light goes
A shaded table lamp and an exposed ceiling fitting distribute light differently. If the old arrangement was too dim, consider whether the shade blocks the useful direction before choosing a stronger bulb. A task lamp may solve the problem without brightening the whole room.
Check control compatibility
A dimmable bulb needs a compatible dimmer, and a smart bulb may require continuous power. Read the instructions for both the bulb and the fitting. Keep the receipt and try the result in the room during the evening, when daylight will not hide an uncomfortable choice.
