Map the evening

Write down where you sit, read and walk after dark. Give the reading spot its own directed light, then use a softer source for the rest of the room. You should be able to cross the space without turning on everything at once.

Keep the screen comfortable

Look at the television from each seat with the lights on. A lamp behind you may reflect more strongly than one beside the screen. Move one fitting at a time and check glossy tables too; reflections can come from surfaces you did not expect.

Give scenes ordinary names

If using smart lighting, name scenes after a purpose such as reading or guests. Keep a physical control available and explain it to other people in the home. Three understandable choices are more useful than a long list of colours nobody remembers.
