Identify the existing hardware

Record the door type, cylinder arrangement and the space around the handle. Compare these with the exact compatibility instructions, not just a photograph of a similar door. Some installations require a particular cylinder function or an additional component; have uncertain fittings assessed professionally.

Plan for ordinary failures

Ask how access works if the phone is lost, the battery is depleted or the internet is unavailable. Verify which functions remain local and whether a physical key can still be used as intended. Never test a new access method by locking yourself out without a proven backup.

Keep permissions manageable

Give visitors only the access they need and remove it when no longer required. Agree the process with other residents, and check tenancy, building and insurance requirements where relevant. Do not publish access codes in shared chats or leave recovery information visible near the door.
